Maths at Olveston

We nurture and develop children’s love of learning through an inclusive, innovative and creative school environment.

Our Vision

Mathematics is a beautiful subject which has its own unique place in the curriculum at school. At Olveston we aim to give children a love of learning maths and provide them with powerful ways to describe, analyse and change their thinking.

Mathematics helps us to understand and change the world:

“Good mathematics teaching is lively, engaging and involves a carefully planned blend of approaches that direct children’s learning….the pitch and pace of the work is sensitive to the rate at which children learn while ensuring expectations are kept high and progress is made by all children” (The Primary National Strategy)

At Olveston we do this through a daily lesson that sets high expectations for all children with a mixture of whole class and group work in KS1 and KS2. During these lessons we encourage children to move their own learning on and give them the confidence to question and challenge their own thinking. Children have an opportunity in every lesson to use their fluency, problem solving and reasoning skills. We also complete times table challenges and arithmetic challenges weekly too. This gives the children the skills they need to solve more complex mathematical problems.

Aims

At Olveston we aim to ensure that all pupils:

  •  Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics
  • Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
  • Can solve problems by applying their mathematics
  • Are set challenging targets with high expectations.
  • Are offered a variety of approaches to teaching and learning to engage and motivate and demand their active participation.
  • Have a smooth transition between Key Stages and ensure progression in teaching and learning throughout their time at School.
  • Explore enrichment opportunities outside the curriculum to enhance their enjoyment of mathematics.
  • Most importantly, develop a love of Maths!

“Mathematics is a creative and highly inter-connected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.” (New national curriculum)
