English at Olveston
Literacy permeates our entire curriculum at Olveston; we select quality, enriching class-texts around which to base the majority of our writing. These texts are linked to our overarching class topics – in fact, sometimes the texts actually are our class topics! We believe strongly that what we read heavily influences what we write.
Here are some examples of class texts this year:
Reception: Supertato by Sue Hendra
Year one: The Man on the Moon by Simon Bartram
Year two: Vlad and the Great Fire of London by Kate Cunningham
Year three: The Wolves in the Wall by Neil Gaiman
Year four: Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown
Year five: War Horse by Michael Morpurgo
Year six: Cogheart by Peter Bunzl
To find out more about the books we are reading and the exciting things that are happening in each class go to our 'Class pages' section of the website. You can do this by clicking on the 'Pupils' drop down at the top of this page.
We celebrate World Book Day for a week! During this time we select a text for the whole school to follow. Last year, it was the Great Paper Caper by Oliver Jeffers. From Reception to year 6, every child was absorbed by the book and produced brilliant writing as a result.
Here at Olveston, we believe that every child already has the imagination of a writer and that our curriculum will hone their skills, enabling them to get their ideas down on paper! Our vision is for pupils of Olveston to become confident, capable, enthusiastic writers with a genuine love of writing. In addition, our children will use writing to express themselves and communicate with others – after all, a world without words would be like a universe without stars!
Reading enables us to access the world and is at the heart of all learning. Our aim at Olveston is to foster a lifelong love of reading; we achieve this by encouraging children to read texts from a wide range of genres. Our beautiful, well-resourced library provides an enriching environment for reading, and our classrooms contain book corners from which children.
